I. Introduction of Officers

a. Akshar Patel- President

II. Kathleen Maier (Pre-Professional Advisor)

a. You can schedule appointments with her every semester to touch base on what and how you are doing in regards to premed
b. Fall of Junior year- start a folder for medical school applications with Kathleen
c. Grades- as freshman don’t become over extended and keep your grades up! 3.5/ 3.6 GPA is current average
d. Letters of Recommendation
i. Many medical schools require two letters of recommendation from science professors.
ii. Utilize your resources (ERC, Professor Office Hours, Pre-Professional Advisor Kathleen Maier)
iii. Be smart when it comes to your course load.
1. If you have taken on a bigger load than you can carry, meet with your academic advisor to see how you can take care of yourself.

III. Pre-Med Course Requirements over your 4 years at Tulane

a. Begin planning your tentative time line for completing your premed courses over your freshman and sophomore (and junior) years.
b. Chemistry (General and Organic) + LABS
c. Biology (Cell Bio, Genetics or Evolutionary Bio) + LABS
d. Math (Calculus I, Calculus II or Probability and Statistics)
e. English
f. Make sure you check with Admission Requirements for schools you are interested in applying to.

IV. What extra-curricular activities you should be considering

i. Internships and Research Opportunities through updates from the Pre-Med Society
ii. Medically related activities: volunteering, medical internships, job-shadowing, medically related summer camps


V. Creative Scholars Program
a. If you not completing a science major, it is recommended that you take genetics and biochemistry as additional pre-med courses before med school
b. Allows students who are interested in Studying Abroad more flexibility to complete their premed courses and study abroad their junior years.

VI. Pre-Med Plus Incentive

a. Active membership is the Pre-Med Society is a wonderful way to show your interest as a premed student. It also helps your pre-professional advisor recognize your involvement and dedication to your career goals when she writes your letter of recommendation.

VII. Pre-Med Society events for the Fall and Spring Semesters

i. Theme for this semester is preparative. It is intended to make sure that students are taking the correct courses, are informed about what they need to do and what options are available to you. Spring semester will be focused more on speakers from a number of different specialties (Surgery, Dental, Nursing, etc.) as well as a Medical Student Panel and much more!

b. Tentative Schedule
· October 1, 2008- Kenya/ Kaplan Meeting- Jones 102- 5:30PM
· October 9, 2008- Mock Interview and Up ‘Til Dawn- Jones 102 5:00PM
· Week of October 13, 2008- Representative from LSU/ Tulane Medical school information session/ sign up for med-school tour
· October 28, 2008- Speaker from Life University Chiropractic + Princeton Review
· Week of November 3, 2008- Dual meeting with Army and Air Force
· Week of November 10, 2008- Upper-class Panel
· November 19, 2008- Speaker from Southern Optometry-5PM
